He was as athletic as any player I've seen. Some of the dunks he had from his #8/afro days are absurd. And he was still throwing them down before tearing his achilles.

He was surely athletic. He also did a bunch of heavy squatting which I think built up the athleticism even more during his first 5 or so years, but there are a bunch of TRULY athletic (world class athletes that would be Olympic level jumpers and runners) come through the NBA. Kobe is pedestrian by comparison.

But Kobe was never in that GOAT tier of athleticism that MJ, Shaq, Vince, Malone, Wilt had. He was a tier below them.

Whatever else you might say about Kobe, I can't think of anyone that has ever tried harder to max out his potential as a basketball player. He just kept working.

I dont know, Moses Malone was aba all star and aba all rookie with 18.8/14.6. KG, lebron and Amare have to be up there as well.

Kobe improved his footwork and other facets of his game every year, though..even getting training from Hakeem.at 31.

You can see the difference between young Kobe footwork and the old Kobe masterclass; there were plays during the first threepeat where he relied on athleticism and smarts more than footwork technique..

Back in 1995-96 I don't think they were fully comfortable with it yet. KG had just come out the year before, and he was the first guy to be drafted out of high school since 1975.

Kg was the first hs player taken in a long time, and NO guard had come out of HS, people were wary of drafting a guard out of HS at the time.

Reminds me of this story

“The first time I began to understand why he was the best was in the pre-season. In a game against the Wizards, Kobe broke the wrist on his shooting hand. He was always the first person to practice every day, arriving at least an hour and a half early. This would infuriate me because I wanted to be the first person to practice, just as I had always been at Villanova and Piscataway High in New Jersey. To add insult to injury, I lived only 10 minutes from the practice facility — while Kobe was at least 35 minutes away.

“I am ashamed to say that I was excited the day after his injury because I knew that there was no way that No. 8 (as former Laker point guard Tyronn Lue called him) would be the first to practice, if he would even be there at all.

“As I walked through the training room, I became stricken with fear when I heard a ball bouncing. No, no, it couldn’t be! Yes it could. Kobe was already in a full sweat with a cast on his right arm and dribbling and shooting with his left.”
